Holocaust Memorial in Berlin Defaced in Latest Antisemitic Incident

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin was vandalised this week after one of its concrete stele was discovered covered in green graffiti containing what police described as inflammatory content, reports The Jerusalem Post.

According to the Berlin Police, the damage was discovered on Tuesday morning. Security staff at the memorial quickly covered the graffiti, and specialist cleaning services were brought in to remove it.

The investigation has since been handed to state security authorities. No suspects have yet been identified.

The Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe said it regarded the incident as antisemitic and involving seditious property damage. The organisation strongly condemned what it described as an insulting attack on a site dedicated to Holocaust remembrance.

The vandalism comes amid a broader rise in antisemitic incidents across Germany. Earlier this year, antisemitic graffiti was found on residential buildings in Berlin’s Pankow district, including slogans such as “Kill all Jews,” swastikas, and the phrase “Only a dead Jew is a good Jew.”

Israeli ambassador to Germany Ron Prosor warned at the time that openly antisemitic rhetoric was increasingly appearing on German streets.

The Holocaust memorial has also previously been the site of violent antisemitic attacks. In March, a Syrian asylum seeker was convicted after stabbing a Spanish tourist at the memorial in February 2025. Prosecutors said the attacker told police he wanted to kill Jews.

The latest vandalism has renewed concerns about the growing visibility of antisemitism in Germany, particularly attacks targeting Holocaust remembrance sites and Jewish communities.
