Berlin police have arrested a 31-year-old man following an alleged antisemitic assault on a Jewish man and two children in the Charlottenburg district, amid a continued rise in anti-Jewish incidents across Germany, reports The Jerusalem Post.
According to police, the attack occurred at around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday when the suspect allegedly followed a 47-year-old Jewish man and the two children accompanying him while shouting antisemitic abuse and spitting at them.
The man, who was wearing a kippah, confronted the suspect and was allegedly punched in the face. Bystanders intervened to assist, including a 45-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman.
Police said the suspect then directed further antisemitic insults and threats towards the woman. A physical confrontation subsequently took place between the suspect and the 45-year-old man.
The investigation has been transferred to the State Security Division of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office, which handles politically motivated and extremist offences.
The incident comes at a time when Germany is experiencing the highest levels of recorded antisemitism since monitoring began. According to the latest annual report by the antisemitism watchdog RIAS, 8,725 antisemitic incidents were recorded across Germany in 2025, an average of approximately 24 incidents every day.
The report documented 178 physical assaults and 257 threats during the year. Among the cases recorded were four Jewish community members who were verbally abused and spat at outside a Jewish prayer room in the city of Kehl, as well as a rabbi in the state of Hesse who was pushed in a supermarket in front of his children and had his mobile phone stolen.
RIAS also recorded four cases of extreme violence, including a terrorist attack at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin.
The attack in Charlottenburg adds to growing concerns among Jewish communities and authorities about the increasing frequency of antisemitic harassment, threats, and physical violence in Germany.
