British Jewish communities have raised alarm after pro-Palestinian activists announced plans to stage a demonstration outside a London synagogue on Sunday, prompting warnings that such protests are increasingly being used to intimidate Jews in the UK, reports The Jerusalem Post.
The United Synagogue, which represents Orthodox Jewish communities nationwide, confirmed it was aware of the planned protest outside one of its member synagogues and was coordinating with police. In a statement on X/Twitter, the organisation stressed: „Jewish life has to be allowed to continue in this country without British Jews feeling under threat.”
The Metropolitan Police also acknowledged the demonstration, saying that officers would be deployed at the site and that „Public Order Act conditions” had been imposed to prevent disorder and disruption. „We understand why the group’s decision to protest at this location will cause concern to some communities,” the force added.
During the event, officers arrested two individuals — one for failing to comply with the conditions imposed under the Public Order Act, and another on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.
The planned protest prompted an organised counter-demonstration by the pro-Israel group Stop The Hate UK, which said it mobilised supporters to defend the synagogue from activists who, it claimed, sought to „terrorise the local Jewish community and our place of worship.” The group declared: „We will never accept protests or intimidation outside our synagogues. They shall not pass.”
The Board of Deputies of British Jews condemned the protest as „absolutely unacceptable,” saying it had been working with the Community Security Trust, Stop The Hate UK, and other local partners in preparation.
The incident follows a similar episode in New York last week, when anti-Israel activists targeted a Nefesh B’Nefesh programme held at Park East Synagogue, fuelling concern about a broader trend of demonstrations being deliberately staged outside Jewish religious spaces.
