Anti-Jewish pogrom in Amsterdam: at least ten injured, two missing after Ajax-Maccabi football match

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators attacked Israeli football fans after the Ajax Maccabi-Tel Aviv match. At least ten were injured, and two fans are missing. The scene was chaotic, with fans being chased with knives and attempts to run them over with vehicles. Several Israelis barricaded themselves in a shop.

Benjamin Netanyahu sent two emergency flights to evacuate Israelis and called on the Dutch authorities to take immediate action. The National Security Council warned Israeli citizens to avoid appearing in public and wearing Israeli symbols.

The IDF is coordinating the rescue operation, and a cargo aircraft and two Hercules squadron aircraft are being sent with medical and rescue teams.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett warned on X that the situation was „life-threatening” and called on the Dutch government to intervene.

„It appears that an organised pogrom has taken place in Amsterdam,” Bennett wrote.

The atmosphere was already tense before the match after footage surfaced on the internet of a Maccabi Tel Aviv supporter ripping a Palestinian flag from a window.

In one incident, a Maccabi fan was chased by Dutch citizens of Turkish origin after his passport was stolen and then pushed into the river. The victim suffered no injuries.

In another incident, Dutch citizens of Turkish and Moroccan origin gathered outside a casino in Amsterdam to wait for Maccabi fans inside. At around 1.30 am, two fans entered the casino with visible injuries and blood on their faces.

Security immediately cordoned off the casino and ordered the Israelis to go downstairs, as about 50 people, armed with knives and sticks, were waiting outside.

„We left in small groups. The whole situation was surreal. The city is full of Palestinian flags, and almost all the taxi drivers are Arabs. If they find out you are Israeli, they are very hostile,” reported one Jewish supporter.

In a statement, the Action and Protection League called it unacceptable that organised anti-Jewish pogroms can take place in Europe in 2024.

„Football fans got hunted just because they are Jewish. This is unacceptable! We call on the Dutch authorities to take strong and clear action against the terrorists who persecuted Jews tonight, and we call on the EU to take effective actions to ensure the safety of every Jewish person in Europe.”
