Oregon man faces trial for vandalizing synagogue with antisemitic graffiti

A man in Oregon pled guilty to two counts of defacing the Temple Beth Israel synagogue with antisemitic graffiti and one count of attempting to damage the building. He is now facing years in prison.

Adam Edward Braun, of Eugene, Oregon, is now facing trial after pleading guilty to two counts of defacing the Temple Beth Israel synagogue and one count of attempting to damage it, the Justice Department confirmed on Tuesday.

Between September 10 and 11, Braun allegedly spray-painted „1377” onto the exterior of the synagogue, a number selected based on their similarity to „1488,” Braun admitted.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, „1488” is a neo-Nazi code referencing the 14 words coined by The Order’s David Lane: „We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children. „88” is the numerical equivalent to „HH,” used as a code for „Heil Hitler.”

Months after the initial attack, Braun returned to the synagogue and attempted to smash the building’s glass doors with a ball-peen hammer. However, Braun admitted that he changed his mind after noticing security cameras and graffitied „white power” over a different part of the building instead.

Braun now faces a year in prison for each respective charge, fines, and restitution to the synagogue, reports The Jerusalem Post.
