Two synagogues in the Greater Toronto area were targeted by gunfire late Friday night, in what authorities say is part of a series of attacks on Jewish institutions in recent days, reports Israel National News.
Police north of Toronto reported that shots were fired shortly before midnight at Beit Avraham Yosef of Toronto, one of the largest Orthodox synagogues in North America. According to York Regional Police, no one was injured, although the building sustained damage.
In a separate incident the same evening, gunfire was also directed at Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue. Police confirmed that while the building was damaged, no injuries were reported.
Authorities say the shootings form part of a broader pattern of attacks. Over the past week, five separate shooting incidents have targeted Jewish institutions or businesses run by Jews across the Toronto region.
Security camera footage from two of the incidents reportedly shows a man firing more than 20 rounds from a handgun at buildings while another individual waited nearby and filmed the attack.
Police have not yet announced any arrests, and investigations remain ongoing.
In response to the incidents, law enforcement agencies have increased patrols and security measures in Jewish neighbourhoods and around synagogues and other communal institutions.
According to police data, since the October 7 attacks, more than 60 per cent of reported hate crimes in Toronto have been directed at the Jewish community. Authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation amid heightened international tensions.
